Stovetop oatmeal makes the instant stuff taste like paper.  Apple cinnamon flavored paper, maybe, but paper nonetheless.  For this meal, as in all things, I follow Alton’s instructions.  (The pale chunks are canned pears, which I forgot to show in the ingredients photo.)  The time commitment makes real oatmeal a weekend thing, but the leftovers reheat nicely on weekday mornings.  It’s a good carb-tastic breakfast before a long run.  Now, if only someone would develop a food that kept your strength up through an afternoon of lab report toil…
